What’s Learning?

What are your thoughts when you read these 6 words?

Hear >>>>> Listen
See >>>>> Observe
Know >>>>> Learn

What is the definition of the word – “Learn”?

  1. I learnt all about driving!
  2. I learnt how to drive!

Is “Learn” the same in both these contexts or is it different. Does it matter if it is same or different?

• The first one refers to the topic being committed to memory (Know)

• The second one refers to the actual act of driving on a road (Do)

In an organisational sense, the difference is acute and stark.

It is of no use to organisations if their employees “know” what to do as part of their job role or even better “know” how to execute their roles.

Organisations are benefitted when employees “Do” what is expected of their roles.

In the former, “Know” is cognitive and in the latter “Do” is action.

Organisations survive and grow when employees “Do” based on what they “Know”, not just remain content with what they “Know.”

This is fairly common sensical universal truth – results come not just because of what we know but because we do.

Knowledge doesn’t necessarily lead to actions (behaviour) – we need to overcome fears therefore we look to behaviour of others to “Learn” how they are doing it and imitate. In essence, while “knowing” can happen in isolation, “doing” is facilitated in social contexts; what we called “social learning.”

So, the kid who knows most need not necessarily get the best grade, if the kid is unable to pen that knowledge on paper using faculties beyond knowledge – ability to manage stress, prioritise etc.; behaviours the kid would have learnt and copied from people around him.

The ability to “behave” consistently; what we call “behaviour” is a result of one’s body becoming comfortable with the exam process – which is a result of constant practice.

In effect, it is behaviour that enables results and behaviour is facilitated by biological comfort for the particular action, which is a result of practice.

What are you doing everyday to get your body comfortable with behaviour that improves the quality of your life – personal and professional?
